'Offensive' material is still out there! - Thursday Evening

It has been reported that Microsoft and Symantec (Norton Antivirus) have been given a score of under 35% according to a new survey. I know that surveys can be portrayed in anyway that you want e.g. you could say that 65% of offensive material is made newly every day. However, I think that the problem is there. 'offensive material' is on the internet for a reason. If people were offended by these sites, then they wouldn't exist. This means that people visit them and over protective parents don't want their children to view this. It is understandable that you wouldn't want your child to see executions on terrorist sites but this isn't really what the companies are trying to protect. 'Offensive material' is generally meant as pornography. This is because it is a taboo subject. It is the same with television. Anything to do with sex (even sex education) has to be shown after a certain time at night yet drugs and violence can be mentioned at any time of the day.

The question is; would you rather have your child dealing/taking drugs, or knowing about sex? Sex is natural and it should not have this taboo attached to it. In the 1900s, sex was never mentioned at all and was 1000 times worse than it is today. It was slowly and gradually becoming okay during the 30s and 40s and then the 60s hit. Naturism was popular as to the hippie and flower power revolution and summers' of 'love' were being formed every year. It did carry on a bit into the 70s when the musical; Hair was released on Broadway and in London's west end with some scenes performed entirely in the nude. This was a revolution in the way that nudity was beginning to be accepted. Now however, 'the joy of sex' is awkward and embarrassing in the society that we live in. Sex is now associated with alcohol, drugs and other things that are frowned upon when if you think about it, a human's whole life is designed to create more human beings. You are born, go through puberty, have sex, age, die. This running order is what all animals are based upon yet to have sex is considered 'dirty' and 'disgusting'. Mankind insists therefore on making their pets infertile for no other reason than because it is a 'sin' to religion.

Back to the main point, I don't see why internet providers make the options of protecting your children against natural things. If they are on those sites, then they have obviously wanted to be and websites already have a page that tells you that they contain adult content so what is the problem? I haven't seen a single internet provider that doesn't have parental controls in place.

My last point is this: In the U.K, the law states that a person can have sex if they are 16 or over (as long as the other person involved is also 16 or over). So why is it that you can have sex but you can't see it for yourself until your 18. These are laws that were made a long time ago and are now out of fashion. When will the governments of the world understand this. Having sex is as natural as going to the toilet. Are they going to stop us from doing that? No. So why outlaw this?

Well, that's my talk about something I read on the internet. The ideas and concepts are all mine. If you agree or disagree then please leave a comment. Thanks for reading and I'll see you tomorrow!
